Revisiting some older photographs again. This time they are of 'the lake' - the family cottage I have been visiting since I was a baby. I've been thinking about these photos for awhile now and I think there is something there. I'm imagining everyone in the family is down there right now, most likely playing cards or reading, with the wood stove burning. May Long Weekend is traditionally the weekend to open up the cottage but also is usually cold and this year, I wouldn't be surprised if there is still snow or ice hidden in the forest. I've been photographing the place more deliberately for about 8 years and my concern is, as always, the feel of the place. In this case, the 'place' is one of the most familiar environments that I have known. There are a whole set of memories and lifetimes evident for me in the details of the architecture and the natural environment- it's akin to the oldest, most comfortable slippers someone could own. It's probably also a huge influence on why I've chosen to live in a national park with pine trees in the front yard.

A bit of summer to tide me over until it's actually summer ( as it snows in Banff 12:26pm on May 14th.)
Also, still trying to figure out why I think this photo works for me. I've decided I want to start taking portrait photographs that have the same mood as the landscape and still life type of work that I do. This picture seems like a good starting point.

It used to be a bowling alley and then somewhere along the way it was built to be used as a set for a movie. The 1950's paraphernalia was a consequence of the movie but the people in the town liked it so Evelyn chose to keep it when she took over the restaurant.

This is a shot from Evelyn's. She was preparing fresh Strawberry Shortcake or an approximation/ creation of a dish similar. One of the best things about this project is all the amazing homecooked food Lindsay and I have been able to eat! This morning we had the Chuckwagon's Eggs Benedict for the second time- so amazing. The beef is raised by the owner of the restaurant and is the tenderest, most savoury beef you'll experience anywhere. For anyone looking for a really great breakfast, the Chuckwagon is only about 45 minutes from Calgary and it located in Turner Valley.
Evelyn's is a bit further but the baked goods are to die for. Plus both places have great ambiance and friendly owners and staff. The same goes for Marv's in Black Diamond. It's been a great experience getting to know the people and the stories behind each of these places. I have high hopes that the final installation will be rich with narrative and mood.
