The Amazing Queen of the Pinhole does Italy!

My friend and artist Dianne Bos is hosting another pinhole camera workshop in Italy this summer - check it out!

This coming May (2012) I will again be offering a 1 week pinhole photography course in beautiful Umbria, Italy--sunshine, rolling hills, a picture-perfect hilltown overlooking the Tiber River Valley, vineyards and olive groves, amazing local food and wine! This workshop offers a chance to explore pinhole photography, in the same environment where Leonardo da Vinci once experimented with similar image projection techniques.

No darkroom or camera experience is necessary. Great for beginners but also wonderful for those with some experience who would like to shot and develop pinhole photographs while in Italy.

Dates: The 1 week program is May 19- May 26, 2012 (Saturday to Saturday) and costs 1400 euros--currently about $1850 CAD--which includes just about everything for 7 days, except your air ticket! (The exact price will depend on the exchange rate on the day you pay.) The workshop will be housed at The International School of Painting,
Drawing, and Sculpture in the beautiful hill town of Montecastello di Vibio, halfway between Rome and Florence. The little town itself is full of opportunities for inspired photographs--you can see some that I took there and elsewhere in Italy on my websitehttp://www.diannebos.com/exhibitions.html

• Transport to and from Rome Fiumicino Airport (you just get to the airport before our meeting time at noon on May 19—we meet you and take it from there.)

• 3 great meals a day--Our cook is amazing--we eat a very healthy diet--lots of local fruits and vegetables, cheeses, fresh bread from the town bakery, homemade pastas and soups, plus great meat dishes. To drink--local wine, of course--regular and sparking water too!
Instruction
• Experience the magic of pinhole photography by making your own camera and shooting and processing black and white prints using paper negatives. It is also a painless way of learning darkroom techniques. I guarantee you’ll get addicted!
• All pinhole photo materials are included in the price.
• A large class room space in one of the rustic Italian villas that the school uses for classes.
• A group exhibition in Montecastello at the end of the workshop.
• A day trip to see some fabulous art and nearby towns. (Meals and museum admissions on your own on trip days)

Things not to worry about if you're interested: Art/photo supplies--you can bring them--or buy some at the school store; staying in touch with the folks back home (we have internet, e-mail, a school telephone, or bring a cellphone for emergencies); I'm a vegetarian, celiac, etc. (no worries--our cook does it all--deliciously!) I don't know why but I kind of like this lo-fi, point-n-shoot picture of fireworks in Venice. It's basically a crappy 35mm photo but I think I like the randomness after all the 4"x5" and medium format shots I've taken. It's kind of the same as using a pinhole camera in some ways.

If you happen to be in Banff tomorrow, I'm doing a workshop from 11am- 3pm in the Bison courtyard called "The Message Factory" as part of Banff Culture Days I'll be showing people how to make cyanotypes , which can then be sent as postcards. In the process of wrapping up the course in Italy and am reflecting back on the month that I've been here. I think the most valuable part of this experience has been trying things I would not normally have tried, including this little sculpture and installation. It was influenced by the communication within the group of artists and was build from model train lumber that I had leftover from the Banff Bubble project. I wouldn't exactly say I'm a sculptor now, but I did enjoy making this, for what it's worth.

I'm also including a triptych I prepared for my colleague Jagna's show, which was a show within a show. The images were taken in Italy and are about different types of landscape. In any case, I think I'll need to some time to process this experience before I can really understand the transformation in the Corso Aperto (ongoing open studio event) and the course in general.

I'm not too keen to post iPhone jpegs, but here are two pictures from the Dorsale Del Triangolo Lariano trek I did this weekend. One is the view from Monte Croce heading down towards Pian Del Tivano yesterday evening and the other is a photo of a trail marker from today. Beautiful trek from Brunate to Bellagio and was a soulful break from the city. I missed the bus from Como to Brunate so slogged up a Grouse-grind-esque slope to the top of the hill. I don't think I've ever sweat so much in my entire life but a good weekend nonetheless!

I don't know what this is all about but I do head stands at the top of mountain passes when hiking. This was at Burstall Pass last August following an epic day.. 18km slog through a very bad path in Height of the Rockies Provincial Park, a torrential downpour for a solid 45 minutes and redemption in a barely smoking campfire which we coaxed to a good fire after a lot of convincing. Colette may have use Jedi mind tricks. Anyway, this photo is from the next day - still moody and overcast, but not raining.

Flipped 180 degrees, I think it looks like I'm holding the earth.

The show opened on Friday and was a great event with lots of people. I think a lot of the crowd came to see the Andy Warhol exhibit (ha) but a few people came into my exhibition space as well. I got some great feedback and a lot of visitors shared their own stories about Banff which was great. I had the great fortune to have a posse of friends and family there for the opening - I feel like a very lucky artist.

Also, all the staff at the Art Gallery of Alberta were amazing to work with and I am very appreciative of my time spent in Edmonton! Special thanks to Sean for working on the bringing together the carpentry and motion sensor on the Bubble.

Spend a long time working on the bridge yesterday. My Dad had made a great bridge when he was here last week but I wrecked it when I tried to add cobblestones so I had to make a new one. AGH. Also added a person climbing the bridge because my friend Paul has climbed the cracks in the bridge in the spring time. Getting pretty close to being done!!

Did some pics yesterday at Norquay with my buddy Griff and his friends Paddy and Miguel. I've never tried doing ski/snowboard photos like this before and man, it was tricky. Also have a new appreciation for people who do these crazy ski tricks!! Here's a couple that I think turned out okay...definitely do not feel pro in this type of photography.

The work will be part of a solo show I'm having at the Art Gallery of Alberta in May and I'm currently in the thick of making a diorama of Banff at N scale train gauge. Last year the Alberta Government cut arts funding to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts resulting in an across the Board cut to arts organizations of 16%, without consultation and in direct contradicition to their recently developed strategic plan for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. This year the provincial government is considering further cuts to arts funding, which will no doubt result in the death of many valued and innovative arts and culture organizations in our province.

The Professional Arts Coalition of Edmonton is spearheading a campaign to let the provincial government know that further cuts to Alberta's arts and culture sector will hurt the entire province. Feel free to use the I love Alberta Art tag line as part of this campaign. We also encourage you to come up with your own postcards using the same message we feature here to increase the impact of the campaign.

I've just created a new blog for a project I will be bringing together over the next few months. It's a call for participation to help create an artwork called Calgary Dream Log. Essentially, I am asking residents of Calgary to submit a dream report of dreams that they experience the night of October 31, 2010. Big things that look like small things

As usual, I'm interested in the things in everyday life that look odd but are, in actuality, normal average things.

Take for example: this yellow truck. I pass it every time I walk to the studio, but I can't help feeling like it looks like a toy truck even when I stand right beside it. The other day I was shocked to see it being driven around town as I was secretly convinced it never moved from this parking spot in the industrial park. I like the way it looks like something from another time, or better yet, like a toy truck from another time. I not-so-secretly wish that I own it.

I've been thinking a lot about the act of walking lately, and more specifically: the act of walking to my studio. This walk signifies for me an acknowledgement of my practice as an artist, so of course, being a photographer primarily, I'm documenting that act. It's been a nice way to slow down an observe the minutiae of everyday life, but also propels me to think about the transformation that occurs in the walk from work to apartment to studio.
